Apps for field work and litter analysis

As we start 2017, I wanted to share some information about a few simple Apps that I use constantly. These can be found in the App store, and all up would cost less than $10. I’m an Apple user, so I can’t speak to the availability of Android devices but I’m confident there would be something similar.

The first App I recommend is CameraGPS Chunk by LLC.Hasshokukou.

This App captures exact locations, photographic images with a space for field notes.

It allows you to photograph a location, have the address and GPS details attached as well as providing a place to make some quick notes about the site.

I’ve recently traveled from Brisbane to Melbourne and used it continuously along the highways as I’ve been documenting different locations and issues. This App is about $5.00, with it, you can throw away your clipboards or notepads. It even allows you to make audio notes in the field.

When you have your image, location details and notes ready you simply email it to your inbox, and you’re ready for the next site assessment.

The second App is MyCountR PRO – A tally counter

A simple to populate and use tally App, ideal for field observations.

It is described as “a simple but elegant tally counter application featuring a gesture-based user interface”. I’d have to agree, it’s incredibly simple to use and is ideally suited for recording observations.

I’ve been using it when I apply the “Litter Origin – observing 100 people”. You can’t go wrong, and it can be purchased for a couple of dollars in the App store.

During my recent travels, I would often leave this App open on my phone as I enjoyed a coffee or something to drink, merely tapping the screen each time a person would pass the location. Building data on what people are carrying in their hands as they move about the area.

The third App that I can recommend is 1…2 Many by Theresa Ford.

This is a perfect App for capturing data where you have multiple fields of observations, like counting litter.

It is also available in the App store for a couple of dollars. This is another tally style App the difference with this one is that you can add more fields for counting. I could recommend it if you are counting litter or something similar with numerous fields.

This App works perfectly with the free spreadsheet I offer S-A-O-I-E. Another easy to use App for field work that can then be emailed back to your office for data entry and interpretation.

If you’re working in public spaces around litter its a good chance, you will be collecting some data and looking for a way to quickly and accurately record your observations. These three Apps are perfect and can be tailored to suit your specific requirements.

For under $10 you will have an excellent GPS/Photo/Information App, and two tally apps that allow easy and accurate field data to be captured and sent back to your office.

If you have any questions on how any of these Apps relate to litter analysis or how you can adjust them to suit your specific requirements please feel free to contact me at paul@wasteadspace.com.au directly.
